Cannes 2012 : The Trends

Drum rolls please ... The 65th annual Cannes Film Festival opens today and the line-up this year incudes: stars, sequins, frills, thrills and interesting films ... Or not (the verdict is still out as to whether the films screened at Cannes are boring, long and a little too different). Well, as I am no film critic,I will not make you part of my movie reviews. However I can propose a small round up of trends that will mark the 65th edition ... on the fashion side.

Here a gap... there a gap...everywhere a little gap!

Yes,its true, when we talk about shoes, we often refer to the weather and temperature at the same time ... It's not that we are planning to participate in a Miss weather pagent

(although why not ?)

It’s because choicing a shoe often has alot to do with what's happening outside,or inside in my case as the heat in the office this afternoon is causing my feet which remain locked up in my sneakers to scream out for help.It was then that I had the sudden urge to show you the latest styles that have the good taste to let our feet breathe!

Focus on trends: Mexican, Native Amercain, Navajo

Whether you have a inner squaw screaming to come out.. or you can't stand Pocahontas:You won't have a choice this season. The current trend    this season is all about the navajo /mexican/native american style. We had a few hints in winter on our bags and in the form of printed leggings but this season it is back in full force, and it is visiable everywhere, with the latest offerings being awash with vibrant colours especially in accessories.

The trend « navajo »what is it ?

The« navajo » in the fashion world, is a ultra colourful geometric print(although it can also be found in softer pastel versions like this jersey modeled by Kate Moss for Mango), inspired by the richly coloured fabrics of the Mexican,Aztec and Native American cultures. On a cultural note the Navajos are an Native American civilisation from North America, living in reservations in Arizonia and whose weavings are a bright mix of colours and geometric patterns.Personally I love this trend, but more on the accessories side as it is much more enjoyable to incorparate small touches of turquoise, fringes and typical navajo designs.

For thse that would like to experiment with this look,I would recommend a bucket bag or a pair of original style shoes, which are easier to wear than a poncho or leggings.

Canvas Shoes

david_b.jpg

Let's make things clear: we're not going to reinvent the wheel! I'd like to tell you about THE favourite shoe of city dwellers, which is the trainer! Somewhat sport, somewhat trendy, it comes in a variety of styles and colours. Let's look at David Beckham who has been spotted with trainers that match his sweatshirt!

But more than being trendy, the spring/summer 2012 trainer collection shows off lightness and great comfort thanks to a canvas upper. A little look at what's going to come our way this summer...

Jonak

Eccentric, pin-up, original, glamourous, pretty...  According to our style, we already have our favourite brands of shoes, but what we sometimes need is to find OUR casual and trendy brand. It's a brand that assures us elegance and feminity in all simplicity through these models that are very easy to adapt to your daily life and at great prices. It's certainly a sure value...! And if this brand just happened to be...JONAK ?

For those who don't know it yet, Jonak is a Parisian brand that, in 40 years of existance has known how to make their own place and name in the Fashion World by showing off collections that are feminine and refined. This collection is accessable to all wallets.

Twixt...and Shoes!

I like more than just series, and I also like films. I know you're going to tell me that television series are more popular than films. If in the years 1990-2000, the television series served as a trampoline towards movies, today cinema actors and directors turn more towards television series. So movies or television series...? Whatever it may be...

Today I'm going to talk to you about Francis Ford Coppola's latest film : Twixt.

I'm not going to bother to tell you about The Godfather 1, 2 et 3, Apocalypse Now, Rusty James, Cotton Club, Dracula, so on and so forth...neither of his daughter Sophia and her Virgin suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie-Antoinette and Somewhere, to remind you that genius is hereditary.

The story of Twixt begins when Hans Baltimore, played by Val Kilmer, comes into a little village in the United States to promote his latest book. the decoration is already mysterious enough as it is, having seen Edgar Allan Poe taking up home there, and hosting a group of young satanists. The character that Val Kilmer plays, as a low-level writer at the bottom of the mudhole (and a bottle of alcohol), obligated by his wife to write a new novel to pay the bills add to the blackness of the story.

What's next? An original sheriff, who used to write puts Hans Baltimore on the trail of the assassin of a young girl to feed his novel and possibly become a co-author. Our anti-hero starts dreaming about an adolescent named V, Elle Fanning, that he thinks is linked to this murder story. To unearth the clues of the mystery, he needs to relive his personal history in a dream.

I don't yet know if this film matches the reputation of its creator. I may see it and then think about what "grade" I'd like to give it.

And since we're on the Spartoo.co.uk blog, I'll show you a few models that even Elle Fanning, alias V in the movie, could wear :)

Leopard vs Python

python_leopard_hollywood.jpg

Exotic and wild, animal prints are sure values for Spring 2012. What's better for imposing your style in the urban jungle than a style stolen from the two main predators in the food chain? At Hollywood, the stars root for the Safari Dream style. Two of them show off a good example: Katie Holmes, who sports python court shoes to spice up a sober outfit and Kim Kardashian who is pretending to be a trendy adventurer perched on leopard print boots.

Ballerina flats, tongs, sandals or court shoes : python and leopard prints have all the styles! The colours are natural, except when there is a bit of whimsy involved. So which fashion beast have you chosen to be?

Miss L Fire

If you are a fashionista who isn't afraid to be different, if glamour is what defines your wardrobe, if you live with style like a sweet extravagance, Miss L Fire is the next brand that you will want to have. Launched in Great Britain in February 2005, it is one of the first choice products for the feminine press collection such as Vogue, Elle and other glamorous magazines.

A big fashion favourite, Miss L Fire is inspired from a vintage universe where all girls are pinups and glamour comes from Hollywood's golden Era in the 50s. The shoe and handbag collections have a whimsical soul with precious details. Sexy without overdoing it, peppy like it should be, here is the profile of the Miss L Fire woman.

Polka Dots Are Back In Style!

The fashion statement of the moment? Polka dots. Not like a polka...No, the polka dot print, the one, the only, the burlesque, the magnificent. Because I just love these polka dot prints that remind me of the 50’s and that I want to wear with a sharp crayon skirt, scarf in my hair and butterfly glasses on my nose.

Polka dots and me, it's a great big love story. I've always loved this vintage print, that I'll wear rockabilly style on a great fitting dress shirt, with bright red lipstick and a bit of eyeliner on the corner of my eyes. I know, I realize that I dared more when I was studying, but I think that since I've been working, it's calmed down a bit. A fan of Betty Page - who I would gladly take her very short bangs and dark hair - , I would love to wear this style in a vintage-rock spirit. This season (a few years later…), polka dots are always worn in a 50’s version in Wisteria Lane pastel colours, or in a burlesque Wanda Woodward fashion.  Neo pin-ups have plenty of beautiful days in front of them…

Spring is Here!

Beautiful days are here! In just a few weeks, little princesses are going to bring out their spring dresses, thin sweaters and white socks. But to pay tribute to the springtime and budding trees, they must not forget their shoes decorated with a flower print. They will look like the daughter of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck who sweetly matches a yellow dress and pink ballerina flats.

Boots, ballerina flats, trainers and sandals : they have all adopted a springtime print. The colours are sweet, fresh and light, associated with a sunnier design. As to the flowers...in prints, or through beads, or in a raised design. Little girls will love it...and their Mums too! After all, the liberty print is as good for little ones as it is for grown-up fashionistas!

Pataugas

There's already a few years that the brand Pataugas has taken over the casual and trendy shoe market! After having made its first steps in the outdoor field, the brand has put its tennis trainers back into the closet to be able to concentrate on the city shoe all while conserving its founding values such as adventure and ecology. An avant-gardist creation, a whiff of creativity and strong sophistication : this is a stylists recipe for creating successful Pataugas models!

For beautiful days, Pataugas is going ahead on our wishes of joy and happiness with its colourful new collection. Because yes, after all, it's not because we're casual and stylish that we have to wear pale colours. Velcro and high-top trainers, wedge-heel court shoes..., orange, blue, green, yellow, brown... here is a rainbow of possiblities!

My "cool" selection, only for you:

Being Boyish

boy_star.jpg

There is one trend that all the stars will agree to. It's the style that won't leave any room for surprises and perfectly highlights your silhouette. This style is the boyish style, or more commonly called the masculine/feminine style. There's no need to reinvent the wheel to have it: we're just going take clothes from our guy's wardrobe and wear them. Sienna Miller, Keira Knightley and Gwen Stefani have already adopted it and even look classy while taking out the garbage! Pleated trousers, XL dress shirt and a belted vest are the must-haves of this style.

For the shoes, there are two solutions: either we'll put on a trendy lace-up derby, or we'll remain classic and get a pair of moccasins. But there's no way that we're going to stay drab! If masculine shoes can be adapted to feminine style, then we'll adorn them with just enough whimsy. Varnished leather, shiny sequins, bright colours or original accessories: anything goes when it comes to an androgynous style!

Workwear Style

Whether you're a real fixer-upper or not, one of the main trends for this season in masculine wardrobes has been inspired from security shoes. This style is called workwear style which adapts workwear to daily life. An example of this would be a raw denim jean worn as a work uniform, a checkered lumberjack-style shirt and big work boots.

Spartoo in Colours!

This morning at Spartoo, we're launching the new collection! Even if springtime isn't quite here, it should be nice in March and the sun shines longer. In any case, shoes aside, Spartoo is ready with romantic ballerina flats, canvas trainers, boat shoes, colourful court shoes, and wedge heel sandals. You may have to wait a little longer to wear some of them, but they're here!

Shoes aren't the only stars of the season! Fifteen Spartooers volunteered to participate to this photo shoot. They got the full treatment: hairstyling, makeup and clothing style to show off the fact that this season, the new collection is colourful!

They were:

« It's great to be in the studio, but at the beginning, its not really easy to pose. After a while, we'll get into it and have some fun. It was great to be in a good group of people. I would do it again!»

Anyone Can Cook

To be happy, you just need to focus on the little things in life and it seems that cooking and treating your tastebuds right is the goal of more and more people. Just count the number of television cooking shows that make our mouths water while we watch them. As I love good food, I decided to also become a chef for a day and wake up the chef that was sleeping in me by subscribing to a cooking class.

How does it work ?

Step n° 1 : The Reservation

I went on a website that was offering cooking classes and dishes that I could take home with me so I could select my menu from seasonal recipies. I then reserved a date and time.

My menu :

Entrée : Clam pie with avacado and citronella

Main dish : Roast salmon with raw ham and pickled tomatoes

Dessert : Mystery cake with chocolate and spices

Makes your mouth water, eh?

Step n°2 : Action !

I was right on time that day and welcomed by 2 chefs in a nice contemporary kitchen. They gave me a pretty apron to put on. Then I spent 1 hour going from one workshop to another to create each one of the three recipes. The ingredients are available already semi-prepared in the middle of a table to save time. All you need to do is follow the receipe and the chefs' tips.

It's not really difficult.

Step n°3 : Cooking and eating the meal

After all this, I left the workshop with my meal and a free bottle of wine. Once I got home, I put all of the food to cook while keeping an eye on the clock...very important! as I wanted to eat in order. Since everything had to be cooked, my dinner turned out to be an hour and a half long.

So here are some photographs of my creations!

I have to admit that the Mystery Cake doesn't look very tasty and looks like a cheeseburger without the bread...The fault being that I cooked it in my microwave oven...oh well, we don't all have a professional kitchen ;-)

So how about what it tastes like? It was almost perfect.
Entrée : 7/10, it was good and would be great for those people who like mixing unconventional flavours.
Main dish : 8/10, very simple to cook up and a new way to eat salmon (I've made it 3 times since I went!)
Dessert : 5/10, it was a bit dry after cooking; and it tasted better than it looked but I still ate it!

Step n°4 : Redo the recipes (alone) to amaze and delight your family and friends.

Because the goal was also to discover new recipes and know how to use them again. The cooking centre always sends all of the recipes that were done (with cooking tips included). So just invite some friends over, cook up a storm and then while you serve them all add, "Oh, I make this all the time."

Verdict ?

The (+) :

  • An original and convivial experience that you can have with your companion, or with friends!
  • Original and easy recipies that you can add to your cookbook.
  • Real professional kitchen utensils.
  • And what's best of all is that there aren't any dishes to wash!

The (-) :

  • It can be expensive. Count at least 30 euros per person and for promotions, take a look online and maybe you'll be lucky!
  • It reminds us a bit of high school Chemistry class. We follow the recipe while the chef looks on.
  • Cooking time, which is necessary (unless you like eating your food raw). You'll need to plan it in your evening!

As a photographer, what is your main mission at Spartoo?
We receive products in the photo studio and take pictures of them under all angles. These images will then be put online after a final quality verification. With Regis, the service manager, we are striving to be more productive all while providing quality images following the brands needs. Mixing the two is not always easy: we need to juggle a lot with the needs of different brands, seasonalities, and spontaneous demands. I assist him with the development and putting new procedures into place.

Who are the other team members?
Those who prepare the products are in charge of the samples that we receive. They will note down which products are which and then prepare them for the photo shoot: shape them up, clean them, etc. The product will then be given to the photographer who will shoot them under various angles before sending them back to the supplier.

What are the different ways to take pictures of a shoe?
There will be 8 views with pre-defined angles. This is really the product window that is the first thing that the customer will see. The zoom is very important because customers usually buy shoes that they can physically touch and study close-up. We'll also make a zoom on "V.I.P" models. It's important to know what a shoe looks like on the foot. I think that the spariate shoe is the best example: there's no scale on the form of the item if we shoot an empty shoe. Seeing on a foot allows us to give a better representation of what it really looks like when worn. As for bags, that's also true.

What makes up a good product photographer?
A good photographer is someone who knows how to look at the product and see how we can make the best of this product come out in the image. He has to be very picky about imperfections in images--such as dust particles on the product. For me a photographer has a critical eye and will know how to find the best angle of the shoe to really make its personality shine.

The Artist: Silent Films Are Back

The Artist. I've finally gone to see The Artist! I know, it's "better late than never." You just have to admit that with its 20 awards et 40 nominations, it was high time that I went to the cinema to discover this famous black and white silent film that came out in October 2011. This was a challenge for the producer Michel Hazanavicius, and the actor-couple Dujardin-Bejo.

Wonderful ? Boring? What do you think?

For those who haven't yet seen it:

The Artist tells the story of George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) the famous actor in silent films between the 20s and 30s who is confronted with talkies (the first sound films) and the new generation of actors such as the pretty rising star Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo).

Verdict :

Some would say that it is "poetic", "magnificent," a "prodigious work of art," and "captivating" and see this film as the Magnum Opus of the century. For others, this film is "wishy-washy", "been there, done that" and a "pale copy of the past." In short, a big disappointment.

I'm not part of those cinema fanatics who love silent films, who often go to art theaters and essays, but I haven't gone to see "Bienvenue chez les Chtis" 6 times at the movie theater. Therefore, I think I can share my humble opinion.

You will want to see The Artist :

  • To see a black and white, but especially a Silent Film. Lets admit it; besides those Charlie Chaplins, you've probably not seen any silent films.
  • Made in 2012: with modern technology that perfectly copies the vintage style (visible dots and lines) all while keeping a certain image quality and viewing comfort .
  • Jean Dujardin is looking like a gentleman with his little mustache and three piece suit : Yes, this is the man who proclaimed to the world "Yo, how's it going!?" and "Cowabunga!" all while wearing a canary yellow t-shirt and a blonde wig merely 8 years ago.
  • And Bérénice Béjo : because she is pretty, peppy and a very good actress who shows off 20's style hats.
  • Who both show off a great mastery of non-verbal expressions, mime and tap dancing. I just had to go and buy some capers so that I could practice tap dancing too!
  • The nightmare scene is original and even the stingy people like it.
  • Uggie the dog : We knew Jack Russell terriers were talented, but Uggie has really left us amazed. He is such a gifted and talented dog. Uggie received the Dog Palm and was nominated for the title of "Best Dog in a Film" at the "Golden Collars."
  • And the Music : because without it, we couldn't watch this movie for more than 10 minutes.

You may not like :

  • The last 15 minutes: It's true that the movie is only 1 hour and 40 minutes, but the end drags on a bit.
  • Self-imitation : Jean Dujardin's actor performance is wonderful, but often the scenic expressions go to far.
  • The lack of sound in the film: I know, it's a silent film!
  • The frustration of not knowing how to perfectly read lips. That would be wonderful! I know, I know; it's a silent film!

Different Kinds of Leather

Leather is nothing other than skin that has been tanned so that it can be long lasting. It is used for clothing, shoes and handbags. So we know what "leather" is, but what different kinds of leather are there?

Full grain leather

This is the most noble form of leather that is composed of both layers of skin. It is the most noble form of leather. It is tough, waterproof and a high quality product. You'll find nappa leather that has been surface-treated, and also full grained leather, and distressed leather.

Nubuck leather

Nubuck leather is leather skin that has had a special treatment to make it look like velvet. The surface of the leather is scratched with sandpaper. The result is a leather that is supple and easy to work with. This leather can also be oiled to make it shiny.

Sheepskin

Sheepskin is sanded to give it a velvety look while the wool is turned to the inside of the garment. Sheepskin products are warm and breathable, and also robust and supple. Sheepskin is also used for shoes and coats.

Split leather

Split leather is the least noble of leathers. Split leather is in fact the inner part of the skin. It's thinner and not as resistant as full grain leather. However, it is more affordable. We can tell the difference between full grained leather and split leather because of the fibrous state of the outside part of the leather.

Gifts From Christmases Past

After the holidays, we're going to add up all of the presents that were under the tree. Has Santa Claus given you everything that you wrote on your Christmas list, or are there a few gifts that you weren't expecting to get? ?

Shelbe, Aude and Noémie remember gifts that they have loved (or not!) from Christmases Past.

When I was 6 years old, I got a cute Labrador dog. It was the nicest dog that I ever had!
A plane ticket to visit my (then) boyfriend and (now) husband. As I was a student, I didn't have enough money to pay for it myself, so that was really nice.

My Tops :
To me, the present that has the most value had been offered by my grandmother. She offered me one of her engraved jewellery pieces. It's the meaning of the present that touches me.
An invitation to a dinner and show in a Parisian cabaret! I love this atmosphere. It's even better than musical comedies. You have to see one at least once! Great memories...

The worst present that I ever got was an over flowery coffee set. It's the kind of thing that you need to bring out when you invite the person who gave it to you! And I don't even drink coffee!

My Tops :
Four years ago, my family offered me a digital camera. I didn't take a lot of pictures before that, but that was just what I needed. Since then, I always have it with me, especially in the mountains. A little guitar with my name engraved on it that my brother made when he was a teenager. I still have it.

A mini fan that looked like a little Playmobil airplane. This thing was so ugly and useless that I never took it out of its box.
